What You Need to Know About Wood Fence Repair

What You Need to Know About Wood Fence Repair

Wood Fence Repair - Know the Damage and How to Fix it

For your wood fence to last for a longer time, you must do regular maintenance practices such as staining, power washing as well as repairs when, for instance, the climate, mold or termites have had some adverse effects on your wood fence. The wood fence repair you’ll do will depend on various factors including how bad the fence is damaged and the type of wood used, among other factors. Read on to discover what causes damage to your wood fence and how you to determine the right repairs.

The influences that lead to wood fence damage include:

  • Wood rails and Posts Damage

Wood fences comprise posts running vertically and rails running horizontally. Posts and rails may get damaged because of various factors like high, strong winds, insect damage (such as termites and beetles), or even rot. Repairing wood rails and posts depends on the fence design and type of wood. However, it is advisable that you don’t try to do the repair yourself, since if you don’t do it correctly (especially for rails), the fence can be more susceptible to damage and you will likely end up calling a professional anyway.

  • Shifting ground under the fence

Soil shifting due to rain or snow may make the posts to sag and shift, which compromises the entire fence. This is the reason fence posts must be installed at least 3 feet underground or better still, in concrete foundation.

  • Wood cracks and holes

Due to factors like climatic conditions and insect infestation, your wood fence can develop cracks and holes over time. This may call for patching or refinishing slats, boards, and panels if the cracks and holes aren’t too extensive. However, if you think the damage may negatively affect the entire fence, you may need to replace the damaged wood.

  • Wood fence rot

Naturally, wood is susceptible to rot. You have the option to repair wood rot by patching and supporting the rotten rails and posts. However, if the rot is severe, you should consider replacing support boards and panels. Some wood species like redwood and cedar handle moisture better, but they’re a little more expensive. Better still, use wood that’s not waterproof so you can treat it with paint or stain to make it more durable.

  • Sagging posts and gate

Because of soil shifts or rot, the wood posts may sag, which doesn’t necessarily mean they need replacement. You can correct this by digging around the posts, putting them back in their upright position and pouring concrete around the base. You can also use diagonal braces to hold them in place.  Sagging posts or the heaviness of a gate may force its frame to go out of the right alignment, which makes the gate to sag. You can repair this by installing a tension rod that has a turnbuckle adjustment. Better still, remove the gate and attach new wood diagonal braces to hold it in place.

  • Weather damage

Applying wood paint or stains can protect your wood fence from weather damages for long. How long your wood fence will be protected against the weather elements, except, of course, wind and insect infestation, will depend on the type of paint or stain you’ll use. So, it’s essential to get a quality stain or paint. Remember to power-wash the wood surfaces before you paint or stain the wood.

  • Wood replacement panels

Due to storms or wind, panels get damaged and need replacement. Their cost varies depending on wood type and the stains that were used when they were installed. It is advisable to call in a professional to do the wood fence repair, especially if more than one panel needs replacement.

  • Wood gate repairs

Over time, your once-strong gate becomes weak, the hinges become creaky, and the latches won’t catch. It needs repairs. If your wooden gate sags, the hinges can become a problem whether or not the posts have been installed in concrete. Again, some gates have latches which work with handles that are pushed or pulled, and when, for instance, posts shift, the latches won’t reach making it had to close the gate. While you can fix this, calling a professional is advisable.

Factors that influence the extent of wood fence repair:

Amount of damage

How bad the damage is will determine the repair costs, of course, depending on wood type. For instance, pressure-treated wood come with lots of preservatives, which make it last almost indefinitely. Again, some wood species like redwood and cedar handle moisture better. Therefore, investing in such wood will significantly minimize repair costs.

Fence Height

Fence heights vary depending on your city codes and your expectations. This, in turn, affects the costs of your wood fence repairs.

Concrete

When repairing wooden fences with a concrete foundation, you must dig the old posts and foundation up in case they need replacement. You will then use new concrete and set the posts in the right position using braces while the new concrete dries. While concrete foundation can be a little expensive, it supports the posts very well.

Supporting structure

Often, when doing wood fence repair, the posts are the major area of concern should they rot or break since they support the panels and rails. If posts shift out of position, they need to be reset afresh deeper or in concrete foundation.

Usually, damaged posts need patching, refinishing, or replacement depending on the damage and its effect on the other parts of the fence. The total cost of repairing fence supporting structure will be determined by the damage extent, labor required, wood type and number of posts needed.
